Project Bright Sky's Story - A chance encounter while attempting to image The Ring Nebula led Frank Busutil to pose a
question. What concept do blind people have of the universe and can
they enjoy it if they
cannot see it? Upon contacting the Los Angeles Braille Institute's instructor, Don
Weitzman, an opportunity presented itself. He explained: |
||
"Not only can blind individuals enjoy the universe, many can actually see
it. There are 11 million visually impaired individuals in the United States.
Out of that number 1.5 million are considered
legally blind and can still detect
a small amount of light. What they need to see the universe are the proper
optics, something which they seldom see."

Astronomers throughout the world have the proper optics and technology to allow legally blind individuals to see the universe. Project Bright Sky connects these two groups. |
